Tony Veal Award
Tony Veal became Head of the Music Service for Solihull Borough Council, approximately 50 years ago, after being Head of Music at Sharman’s Cross School. Tony Veal started the Solihull Teachers band, which met at The Solihull Teachers Centre in Shirley.
The Teachers band was subsequently opened up to non-teachers and became known as Lyndon Concert Band, and met at Lyndon Music Centre.
The band moved to Langley School and changed name to Harmonie Concert Band.
Chris Davies became joint conductor with Tony Veal approximately 20 years ago.
Tony was passionate about offering music education to children, and at first all music tuition for children of primary school age was free of charge. Over the years Tony arranged thousands of free music lessons for young children.
As a tribute to the memory of Tony Veal, Harmonie Concert Band is committed to raising money to fund a bursary in Tony Veal’s name. The award is open to any child learning music within the Solihull Music Service, who for various reasons find themselves struggling to continue for financial reasons. The award covers 12 months of tuition (1 academic year).
Applications close mid-June each year. To find further information about the bursary email solihullharmonieconcertband@gmail.com
